The essay is a flexible form, adaptable to the writer’s purpose—it can be brief or lengthy, witty or serious, poetic or didactic. Named for the French verb essayer—to try—each essay is a new attempt to balance a specific set of facts with a subjective narration. An essay can encourage reflection, alter opinion, urge the reader to action, or simply be the voice of a friend whispering in one’s ear.
With each essay I write, I hope to establish a bond of understanding between myself and my reader.
